Step 1: Try Harder Than Your Competition

Step 2: Emphasize Your Strengths

Step 3: Get a Professional Resume prepared

Step 4: Apply in Person

Step 5: Follow Up!

Many times it is sheer effort that will set a successful teen job seeker apart from the crowd. Think about it: how many of your friends go that extra measure to get the jobs out there?

√ Cell Phone
Make sure your cell phone message is clear, short, and professional. Take the call waiting music off the phone while you are looking for work.

√ Online Profiles
Clean up your online profiles and pics. What you post and others post about you online should demonstrate to an employer that you are trustworthy, honest, and responsible. If your postings do not show that, you need to take them off the internet. Google your name and find out what employers can find out about you ahead of time.

√ Be an Early Bird
Go early in the morning to put in applications and follow up with employers. You are sending the message to the employer that you are out of bed early and ready to work. A lot of your competition will roll out of bed around Noon and put in their applications after lunch - by then you will have already filled out an application, left a resume and contacted the manager about the position.

Teen Job Search Step 2: Emphasize Your Strengths

As a teen job seeker, you are your own best marketing tool to a potential employer. To catch the employer's attention out of a huge crowd of competition, you need to emphasize your strengths and prove your abilities and worth to the employer.

Make a list of your strengths and make sure you emphasize them on your application. Here are a few to get you started:

√ Able to work a flexible schedule
√ Proficient in computer use(list the applications)
√ Learns new tasks quickly and easily
√ Reports to work on time
√ Is responsible & reliable

Teen Job Search Step 4: Apply in Person

It is great to apply online for a job, but when ever possible follow up to check on your application in person. Remember these tips when you do:

Dress appropriately

Wear properly fitting dress clothes, kaikis or dress pants, a nice shirt or shirt and tie, no crop tops, low cut tops or pants, no flip flops or jeans

Grooming

Hair should be washed and trimmed, shave, and cover tatoos where possible with long sleeves

Smile

Keep a positive attitude and be polite to everyone you speak with at the store

Go alone

Don't apply with friends. If you're not alone the employer may wonder if your friends will be hanging out at the store distracting you from working

Take a resume

Attach a resume to each application that you fill out. It will set your application apart from the stack of applications the employer has

Ask to speak with the manager

Get the manager's name so you can follow up with them about the job opening.

Silence your cell phone.

Put your cell phone on vibrate when applying. Don't text while applying or interviewing

Teen Job Search Step 5: Follow Up!

In order to get the job, you must be persistant in following up on applications. Don't give up until you get the job!

Keep a list of the employment applications you have submitted and then follow up with the employer each week.

Keep a Job Search Journal to track your progress.
