Sample Resume Objectives & 4 Easy Steps to Write Them

resume objectives Resume objectives should be customized and specific to each position you are applying for in order to make an impact on an employer. In this job market an employer receives hundreds and thousands of resumes every day.

A busy employer sorting through a stack of resumes will glance at your resume for less than a minute.

In order to keep the employer's interest, your resume style should showcase your strengths in one glance. After your contact information, you should build your resume to start out with a strong, effective objective or professional summary.

Vague Statements are Meaningless to an Employer

In an effort to save time, many people use a "one size fits all" resume objective for every job opening they apply for. In order to fit all job descriptions, the statement becomes so vague that it is meaningless and ineffective to an employer who is filling a specific position; make yours focused and customized to each position you apply for.

4 Easy Steps to Write Your Resume Objective

1) Focus on how you would benefit the employer.
As you apply for jobs, your focus should be on the skills, characteristics, and experience the employer is looking for. For your first step, pick one advertisement for a job opening you want to apply for. Then underline all the skills, characteristics, and experiences the employer has advertised they are looking for.

    Sample Want Ad:
Staff Nurse Wanted. Seeks Master's level RN with 1-3 years of recent clinical experience. Provide care for multiple patients each day during medical procedures. Assist during treatment and examination of patients. Administer local anesthesia and prescribed medications.

2) Match your skills to what the employer is looking for.
Make a list of the skills, characteristics, and experiences that match what the employer is seeking. Use the same keywords and language from the employer advertisement.

    Example Skill List:
Master's Degree, RN with clinical experience in Specialty Hospital, Strong Interpersonal Skills, Experience dealing with multiple patients during medical procedures and assisting with local anesthesia and medications.

3) Quantify your results.
How many years of experience do you have? How many people did you serve or manage in your previous position? Wherever possible, quantify your results.

    Example:
Master's Degree, RN with 5 years clinical experience in Acute Care Specialty Hospital, Experience dealing with 10-15 surgical procedures daily and assisting with local anesthesia and medications.

4) Write a first draft that is Specific and Concise.
Resume objectives should be one to two short sentences. Use the same keywords and language from the employer advertisement in your resume objective statement.
