Interview Tips (Part 1)

Answering Interview Questions

Employment interview questions can make the most confident person a little weak in the knees. Instead of freaking out, spend your time and effort preparing for the interview. A little preparation will go a long way toward making you feel more comfortable interviewing.

Review the top ten interview questions employers use and think about what the employer is really asking. What do they really want to know about you? What qualities and skills are relevant to the job they are seeking to fill?

Once you know what information the employer is really trying to find out, you can plan and create good answers for those interview questions. Practice your answers until you feel prepared for anything the employer might ask you.

Encouraging Thoughts

I used to have an intense dislike for speaking in front of groups...and made the mistake of disclosing this fact to one of my previous managers. Much to my horror, he said, "you know the old adage, practice makes perfect", and proceeded to "volunteer" me for various "opportunities" to speak to groups of my peers and customers.

Actually, that manager turned out to be one of my favorite supervisors because he took a real interest in the development of my career and skill sets. He cared enough to create situations where I could grow and develop into the person he knew I could be. It was uncomfortable for awhile, but the more I prepared and the more I practiced, I started to gain confidence and today really enjoy working with and speaking to groups.

Practice makes perfect, so challenge yourself, break the chains of your own limitations, and get past the things you are avoiding!

Considering a New Career Field?
Check out this "In Demand" Job

Every week I feature information on a different In Demand Job, which are those occupations that are projected to have long-term growth, are economically important, or are being transformed by technology and innovation. Most jobs featured here have a projected growth that is average or faster than the average job, which means that there should good demand for workers in that occupation.

Cost Estimators

Median wages (2009) $27.55 hourly, $57,300 annual
Projected growth (2008-2018) Much faster than average (20% or higher)

Accurately forecasting the cost, size, and duration of future projects is vital to the survival of any business. Cost estimators develop the cost information that business owners and managers need to make a bid for a contract or to decide on the profitability of a proposed new project or product. They also determine which endeavors are making a profit.

Job Outlook
About 59 percent of cost estimators work in the construction industry, and another 15 percent are employed by manufacturers. Good job opportunities are expected; those with industry work experience and a bachelor's degree in a related field will have the best prospects.

Other Qualifications
Cost estimators need to have an aptitude for mathematics, be able to analyze, compare, and interpret detailed but sometimes poorly defined information, and be able to make sound and accurate judgments based on this information. The ability to focus on details, while analyzing and managing larger obstacles, is vital. Assertiveness and self-assurance in presenting and supporting conclusions are also important, as are strong communications and interpersonal skills, because estimators may work as part of a team alongside managers, owners, engineers, and design professionals. Cost estimators also need to be proficient with computers and have skills in programming.

Employment change
Employment of cost estimators is expected to grow by 25 percent between 2008 and 2018, much faster than average for all occupations. Growth in the construction industry will account for most new jobs in this occupation. In particular, construction and repair of highways, streets, bridges, subway systems, airports, water and sewage systems, and electric power plants and transmission lines will stimulate the need for more cost estimators.
