Considering a New Career Field?
Check out this "In Demand" Job

Every week I feature information on a different In Demand Job, which are those occupations that are projected to have long-term growth, are economically important, or are being transformed by technology and innovation. Most jobs featured here have a projected growth that is average or faster than the average job, which means that there should good demand for workers in that occupation.

Baristas

Baristas prepare or serve specialty coffee or other beverages. They also serve food such as baked goods or sandwiches to patrons.

Average employment growth is expected, and job opportunities should be excellent for food and beverage serving and related workers as turnover is generally very high among these workers, but job competition is often keen for jobs at upscale restaurants.

The median wage for a Barista in 2008 was $8.42 an hour. The projected growth for this occupation is average (7 - 13 %).

Benefits for Part time Employees

If you have been out of work for sometime, or are looking for a career change, you might have a concern about how to handle your need for medical benefits. One idea is to find a part time position with a company that offers medical benefits while you continue to pursue full time employment.

I've listed a few companies that offer benefits for part time employees here to get you started, with a link to their website.

Starbucks

Starbucks' has locations in the USA and internationally. It is one of my favorite places to stop and treat myself to a great cup of coffee or tea.

Starbucks has a Total Pay package that is referred to as ?Your Special Blend? because it is unique to each partner. Partners who work full time or part time (generally 20 hours or more per week) may participate in a variety of programs, and make choices based on individual needs and interests.

Benefits in a partner?s total pay package may include:

  • Progressive Compensation Package
  • Healthcare Benefits (Medical, Prescription Drugs, Dental and Vision)
  • Retirement Savings Plan
  • Stock Options and Discounted Stock Purchase Plan
  • Income Protection Plan (Life and Disability Coverage)
  • Management Bonus Plan
  • Adoption Assistance Plan
  • Domestic partner benefits
  • Referral programs & support resources for child and eldercare
  • Discounted Starbucks merchandise

And of course, all partners get a pound of coffee each week. (YUM!)
